ECI invites people in Santa Cruz County who have an interest in
learning about other cultures to host an international student
from one of its programs. Families may host from two weeks
to one semester or longer. Host families receive a generous
stipend for hosting, and teenagers from ECI's host families
are eligible to work as conversation partners during summer
vacation. In addition, host family teens can apply to join
a one-week trip to Japan conducted each March.
WHAT A HOST FAMILY PROVIDES
Host families are expected to provide:
- a clean, safe, and friendly home environment
- a separate room or a bed in a room shared with a child of the same gender and approximate age
- opportunities to practice English and participate in family activities
- meals
WHAT ECI PROVIDES
ECI provides host families with:
- a cultural orientation prior to the student's arrival
- 24-hour assistance
- generous per diem stipend
- daily transportation for short-term programs
- summer employment opportunities for host family teens
- educational opportunities for host family teens to visit Japan
